Bathing Pier in Gothenburg
The bathing pier is located in Askim bay, south of Gothenburg, characterized by a shallow and sandy beach. The architecture reaches 260 meters out to sea, where the sea is deep enough to let people dive. The pier points towards the sea, towards the Näset peninsula.
The lenght of the pier is enhanced by its composition of longitudinal bands, similar to geometric waves running along the whole pier and break, rise, lower by certain points to fulfil different functions. The first band hosts shading structures and benches; the second one, wider, consists in the main walking lane without hindrances; the third one integrates equipments for sunbathing. The fourth band turns into a sequence of three fully accessible ramps ending with platforms placed on the seabed, where the water level allows even users with impaired mobility to swim.
The wood-relief of the formwork is visible on the concrete surface of pier. The equipments along the pier are covered in larch wood, which atmospheric agents will turn grey, making them similar to the concrete and enhancing the visual continuity of the four bands. In a certain way, time will be a relevant aspect for comprehension of architecture.
