COMMEMORATING THE REVOLUTION OF DIGNITY AND MEMORY OF THE HEAVENLY HUNDREDS HEROES

INTERNATIONAL IDEAS COMPETITION - FIRST PRIZE

The center of Kiev has historically been a theater of civil life, in which confrontations and struggles happened, a place of memory. The competition concerns the project of a memorial commemorating the people who died during the Revolution of Dignity of 2014.

The memorial is inspired by the stratigraphy of tree rings, comparing it to the stratification of historical events related to people and territory. It is methaphor of collective memory. The more the territory will be able to contain within itself traces of sedimentation during the time of the signs of the man, the more profound and lively the civil consistency of the people who live there will be.

The pavement on Instytutska Street, on which the Heavenly Hundred Heroes fell, was dismantled during the Revolution. The project finds its main expression on this real tangible layer. Veins of Corten steel creep in between the stones and slide along the way as a flow that spreads in central Kiev. Between the steel veins in the pavement, other traces marks the ground, taking advantage of the natural slope of the street. These traces are there to remind us that there is a story that should not be forgotten, a hidden stratigraphy that gives consistency to the society. At the same time the excavations in the pavement are physical discontinuities representing the break created by the Revolution of Dignity in the obvious historical continuity.

From these wounds, trees grow up to celebrate a new life in peace. Instytutska Street thus becomes an urban forest, a living and widespread memorial, constantly changing, in relationship with the people who animate it.
